How to prepare for your tattoo appointment

There are a few things that getting a tattoo and getting a colonoscopy have in common; both require professional expertise, both are a temporary discomfort for long-term benefits, and both require preparation and planning. But getting a tattoo is actually something you want to share with others.

Before your appointment

Hygiene and skin care:

Keep the area to be tattooed clean and moisturized in the days leading up to your appointment. Avoid sunburn, as we cannot tattoo over a sunburn.

Stay hydrated:

Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment. Hydrated skin is more receptive to the tattooing process.

Get Adequate Sleep:

Ensure you are well--rested before your appointment. Being tired can make the experience more challenging and could cause you to pass out.

Eat a healthy meal:

Have a nutritious meal before your appointment. This helps maintain your energy levels and prevents lightheadedness. A bagel and a cup of coffee will not cut it unfortunately.

Avoid alcohol and drugs:

Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs before your appointment, as they can thin your blood and increase bleeding and infection. Also, do not take Ibuprofen or Advil before a tattoo either, as those are also blood thinners.

Day of your appointment

Dress Appropriately:

Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being tattooed. Loose-fitted and breathable clothes are ideal.

Bring comfort items:

Bring items like headphones, music, or a book to help you relax during the session. It’s common to get cold during a tattoo, so bringing a comfy sweater can help.

Stay calm:

Practice relaxation techniques to calm any nerves. Deep breathing or meditation can be helpful.

Stay Hydrated and Eat:

Drink water to stay hydrated, and have a light meal before your appointment. You can also bring little snacks to eat during the appointment. Sugary, non-caffeinated drinks are great.

Communicate with your artist:

Discuss any concerns or questions with your tattoo artist before starting. Clear communication helps ensure you are both on the same page. If you are one who faints when giving blood, make sure your artist is aware too so we can help prevent you from getting ill.

Aftercare Preparation

Understand Aftercare Instructions:

Listen carefully to your tattoo artist’s aftercare instructions. Understand how to care for your tattoo to promote proper healing.

Purchase Aftercare Products:

Buy any recommended aftercare products, such as antibacterial, fragrance-free soap and fragrance-free lotion or ointment, to keep your tattoo moisturized. We like dove or dial soap and Aquaphor.

Plan for healing time:

Keep in mind that your tattoo will need time to heal. Avoid exposing it to excessive sunlight, water, or abrasive materials during the initial healing period.

By following these steps, you can prepare both your body and mind for a positive tattooing experience and contribute to the successful healing of your new tattoo.
